Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City finish second and fourth respective in the 2010 Barclays NY Challenge
Three days, four matches, one table and Sporting Clube de Portugal are crowned champions of the Barclays New York Challenge 2010. Yannick Djaló and Robbie Keane finished with top scorers with two goals each and Manchester City losing both their matches.
Day 1 (July 22, 2010 Red Bull Arena, Harrison, New Jersey)
The competition started with Premiership club Tottenham Hotspur beating host New York Red Bulls. Former Arsenal striker Thierry Henry made his debut for New York Red Bulls against his former rivals Tottenham Hotspur and scored on debut, scoring in the 25th minute to give New York Red Bulls the lead. On the hour mark, Robbie Keane equalized for Spurs and Gareth Bale scored the winner in the 71st minute.
Day 2 (July 23, 2010 Red Bull Arena, Harrison, New Jersey)
Portuguese side Sporting Clube de Portugal beat high spending Manchester City with Yannick Djaló scoring two goals in the 23rd and 39th minute respectively.
Day 3 (July 25, 2010 Red Bull Arena, Harrison, New Jersey)
The double header was in place at the Red Bull Arena as Tottenham Hotspur met Sporting CP and New York Red Bulls faced Manchester City.
The first fixture seen Tottenham Hotspur drawing with Sporting CP. Robbie Keane opened the scoring in the 24th minute and a minute later Chile International Matías Fernández equalized for Sporting.Jaime Valdés made it 2-1 but Jonathan Obika (on loan to Millwall) made sure that Spurs end the competition unbeaten.
Macoumba Kandji gave New York Red Bulls the lead in the 7th minute with the assist coming from Thierry Henry . The Frenchman was eventually substituted and in the 55th minute Jô equalized for City. Jamaican International Dane Richards 70th minute goal was enough to secure New York Red Bulls’ first victory against a Premier League club.
