Wayne Rooney - A Century Of Goals |

Wayne Mark Rooney scored his 100th goal in 242 appearances for Manchester United in a 5-0 away victory against Wigan Athletic. He is the 20th Manchester United player to do so and he has now joined players as Sir Bobby Charlton (249 goals), George Best (179) and Ruud Van Nistelrooy (150) to name a few.
Rooney was born in Croxteth, Liverpool, England on 24th October 1985. In his early days he used to play his football for Liverpool Schoolboys and Dynamo Brownwings. In 1996 the Everton youth team signed Rooney at a tender age of ten. He stayed with Everton for six years and at the age of 17 he got a professional contract from the Everton senior team.
He came into the limelight when he scored the match winner against reigning league champions Arsenal when the Gunners were at their peak as they were not beaten for thirty matches. Rooney's winner caught the eye of clubs like Newcastle and Manchester United.
Everton manager David Moyes was reluctant to sell the striker for not less than £50 million. Newcastle United's £18.5 million bid for Rooney was rejected but eventually a deal of £25.6 million was struck with Manchester United. It would have been a different Wayne Rooney if he would have chosen Newcastle instead of Manchester United. After spending two years with Everton he completed his move to Old Trafford in 2004.
On 28th September 2004, Wayne Rooney made his debut for the Red Devils in a Champions League group stage match against Fenerbahçe of Turkey. United won 6-2 and Rooney scored a hat-trick on his debut and the rest is history. In 2006 he scored a double against Wigan Athletic to be named the man of the match and to clinch his first trophy by winning the League Cup with United.
All was not well for Rooney as he had a ten-game scoreless streak during the 2006–07 season, but he silenced all critics with a hat-trick against Bolton Wanderers. That very season he signed a two-year contract extension with United which would take him to 2012 as a United player. It was during this very season that he won the English Premier League for the very first time with the Red Devils.
On 28th June 2007 he was awarded the number 10 jersey by Denis Law due to the departure of Ruud van Nistelrooy to Real Madrid. A year later he had made 200 appearances in the EPL which made him the youngest player in league history to do so.
He scored his 100th goal for United with a double strike against Wigan Athletic where United won 5-0. Roney once wore a T-shirt when he was in Everton and it stated "Once a Blue, always a Blue”, I guess he has to wear a similar one stating "Once a Red Devil, always a Red Devil".
