What is the difference between soccer and football ?
There is absolutely no difference between the two. In the United States of America they call it soccer as they already have another sport called ‘American Football / soccer’ which is quite similar to rugby. Although the way the Americans takes a penalty is quite different from the rest of the world.
How many players can play in a football / soccer match?
A total of 22 players play the game of football / soccer. There can be only one goalkeeper on either side on the pitch. The rest of the players can be divided in the following.
- Goalkeeper – Is the only player who can handle the ball
- Defenders – They prevent the opponent to score goals
- Midfielders – They are the providers to the strikers
- Strikers – They are mostly responsible for scoring goals
What is an offside?
Whenever a player is in the opponents half and he is the last player when the ball is delivered to him then the linesman blows the whistle for an offside.
What types of cards are present in the game of football / soccer?
There are basically two types of cards in football / soccer
- Yellow Card – The player is cautioned with this card
- Red Card – The player will be sent off and cannot be replaced by any other player in the team.
Please Note: If a player gets two yellow cards in a match then that counts as a red and he will be sent off.
What if a player is injured during a match?
If a player is injured during a match he will get substituted by another player only if his team has not exhausted all its substitution options.
What if the goalkeeper is injured or red carded during a match?
If a goalkeeper is injured or red carded during a match he will get substituted by another goalkeeper only if his team has not exhausted all its substitution options.
Please Note: If a goalkeeper gets injured or red carded even after all the substitutes are used then an outfield player (Defender, Midfielder or Striker) can take his place.
How many substitutions are allowed in a football / soccer match?
In most tournaments only three substitutes are allowed but in many friendly matches there is no limit
What is a hand ball?
When a player intentionally puts hand to ball then it is termed as a hand ball and the ball is handed over to the opponent.
What is a penalty?
A penalty is basically nothing but a free kick within 12 yards with only the goalkeeper in front to save the goal.
What is a penalty box?
A penalty box has three sections. One box which is 6 yards away from the goal post , the second which is 12 yards (where players take the spot kick from) and 18 yards which is the outer square and it completed the penalty area.
How many minutes in a football / soccer match?
A football / soccer match contains two half’s of 45 minutes each with extra time decided by the fourth official.
What is a penalty shootout?
Whenever two teams are tied and it cannot be decided in normal time then the match goes into a penalty shootout.
How is the penalty shootout decided?
Before the penalty shootout, the coach/manager writes down the 11 players who will take the penalty kicks and the order in which they will take it. Initially there are five spot kicks awarded to each team and if it is still tied then they go into sudden death.
Please Note: Only the players who are present on the pitch can take the penalty shoot-out
What if even after 11 kicks it is still tied, will it be decided over a coin toss?
No, the penalty kicks will be repeated the same way as it started but it will still be sudden death.
What is sudden death?
Whenever a team is tied after five kicks each then it goes to a sudden death in which a team A does not score and team B scores then team B are the winners.
